Content Is Still King

The number one question we get asked is, “how can I get ranked number one on Google?”. When in fact the question should be, “How can I create quality content that will benefit my visitors and get searched for on Google?”

When someone asks us the first question, it tells us that they may not know that content is king. They may not have invested time and effort in crafting good quality content that communicates to people. For those who focus on being number one on Google with poor and little content, I can honestly say, “it’s never going to happen for you.”

You can’t do the bare minimum from a content-development standpoint and expect a content measuring tool like Google to reward you with a high ranking. It’s going to take effort, strategy and an on-going development plan. Because Google’s algorithm changes often, business language continues to expand and contract and people’s behavior is based on needs and seasons, it’s important to keep your content fresh.

I’ve seen companies that have been in business for a while who want to update their website, marketing materials or social media only to fall flat on the ability to create content. They don’t know what to say, how to say it and are a little embarrassed to admit either.

How to get started

If you don’t have someone on staff who is a writer, then hire one (like Studio490) to help you develop the content you need. It requires someone who understands the process, who will ask the right questions, consider the right variables and deliver great content.

You’ll want to have a conversation about objectives, keywords, and call-to-actions needed for each page. If you are going to update your content, don’t just do one or two pages. Put forth the effort to update all of your content to work for you in today’s landscape.

“You can’t do the bare minimum from a content-development standpoint and expect a content measuring tool like Google to reward you with a high ranking.”

Be consistent across the board

Just like your branding needs to be consistent across all your materials, your content needs to be consistent as well. You don’t want to simply update one page on your website and let the rest of your materials remain out of date. You can approach it in phases, but be sure to move through each to have them be consistent to your audience.

  • Website
  • Social Media
  • Printed Materials
  • Emails
  • Newsletter
  • Video
  • Marketing Campaigns

What should happen next: Make a list

Sit down with your team and make a list of areas you need to update your content. Prioritize that list and set achievable due dates and then proceed to update your content. The sooner you do this, the sooner your content will begin working for you again by communicating effectively to your audience.

What should not happen: Start…stop

I’m sorry to say that we’ve had clients take 5 months trying to create new content only to get frustrated and not create anything. It makes for a frustrated team of people working on your project. Some of it may be ability, some may be control issues, some may even be scheduling, but all of that is correctable with help from your team or the right creative source.
